Spicy Vegan Barbecue Sauce

One of the best things about summer is that it is grilling time! At our house, we are lucky enough to look out over the lake as we grill and as we sit at the dining table, and whenever we go out on the patio to grill, you can be sure our two cats scamper in come quickly. They love summer grilling as much as we do, hoping for little scraps of food to drop onto the ground. Along with the cats, barbecue sauce is a great accompaniment.  Try this on your grilled veggies or for a nice thick dip. I even use it in my veggie-loaf.

Ingredients

  • 1 tbsp olive oil
  • 1 large onion, diced
  • 4 garlic cloves, minced
  • 1 tsp celery seed
  • 28-oz can crushed tomatoes
  • 6-oz can tomato paste
  • 2 tbsp hot sauce (such as tobasco), optional*
  • 1/4 cup cider vinegar
  • 1/4 cup light agave
  • 1/4 cup amber agave
  • 2 tsp liquid smoke
  • salt, to taste

Smoothie Directions

Step 1: In a large skillet, heat the olive oil over medium heat. Sauté the onion until slightly tender, about 5 minutes, stirring often  Stir in the minced garlic and sauté for another 2 minutes. Take care not to burn the garlic.

Step 2: Stir in the remaining ingredients until well combined.  Reduce heat to medium-low and simmer for 20 to 30 minutes. Stir often.

Step 3: Salt to taste and remove from heat.  Allow to cool, then puree in a food processor or blender until smooth.

*You may adjust the heat to your liking, or leave out completely.
